5xD Standard Carbide Drills for Medium-Depth Holes

The 5xD standard carbide drill series is designed for medium-depth production holes that require more reach than a 3xD drill without moving to a deep-hole tool. Its extended flute supports depths of up to five times the drill diameter while balancing rigidity, chip evacuation, and hole straightness. Landun 5xD drills can be selected according to workpiece material, hole diameter, hole type, coolant conditions, machine rigidity, and production volume. Material-specific point geometries, flute designs, carbide grades, and coatings are available for steel, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminum, titanium, and other engineering materials.

How to confirm whether 5xD is suitable

Selection Factor Recommended for 5xD
Hole Depth Medium-depth holes up to approximately 5× the drill diameter
Hole Type Through holes, medium-depth blind holes, pre-tapping holes, housing holes, and general production holes
Main Advantage Practical balance between drilling reach, tool rigidity, and hole straightness
Chip Evacuation Demand Higher than 3xD drilling because chips travel through a longer flute
Coolant Method Internal coolant is recommended for demanding applications; external coolant may be suitable depending on the material, diameter, and drill model
Typical Requirement Medium-depth drilling with reliable chip evacuation and consistent hole quality

Frequently Asked Questions

5xD standard carbide drills are used for medium-depth through holes, blind holes, pre-tapping holes, housing holes, and general production holes with depths of up to approximately five times the drill diameter.

The main advantage is the balance between drilling reach and tool rigidity. It can produce deeper holes than a 3xD drill without requiring the longer structure and more demanding operating conditions of an 8xD or deep-hole drill.

Landun 5xD carbide drills can be selected for steel, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminum alloys, titanium alloys, and other engineering materials according to the specific drill geometry, coating, and coolant configuration.

Internal coolant is recommended for demanding 5xD applications because it helps deliver coolant closer to the cutting edges and supports chip evacuation. However, some diameters, materials, and drilling conditions may also use external coolant. The final selection should be based on the drill model and machining conditions.

Yes. Landun can review non-standard diameters, special flute lengths, step geometries, coolant-hole requirements, special point designs, and drawing-based custom carbide drill projects.
