Product Overview

Solid Carbide Step Drill — Multiple Hole Features in One Tool

The carbide step drill is designed to machine two or more hole diameters, depths, or profiles in a single drilling operation. It can combine pilot drilling, hole enlargement, counterboring, chamfering, and stepped-hole machining into one customized cutting tool.

In conventional machining, producing a stepped hole may require several separate tools, such as a pilot drill, standard drill, counterbore, and chamfering tool. Multiple tool changes increase cycle time and may introduce positional errors between different hole features.

A precision-ground carbide step drill completes these operations with one tool. Because the different cutting diameters are ground on the same carbide blank, the relationship between the pilot diameter, larger step diameter, step length, and shoulder geometry can be controlled more consistently.

The integrated design helps improve concentricity between different hole diameters, reduce tool-change time, simplify CNC programming, and improve repeatability in batch production.

This step drill is manufactured from imported MG grade 0.8 μm tungsten carbide with 10% cobalt content. German Walter 5-axis grinding, controlled edge preparation, Walter Helicheck Plus measurement, and 300x cutting-edge inspection help maintain step accuracy, cutting-edge quality, and stable machining performance.

Engineering Details That Improve Stepped-Hole Machining

Integrated Multi-Step Geometry

Integrated Multi-Step Geometry

Multiple cutting diameters are ground on the same solid carbide blank.

The integrated design allows the drill to create different hole diameters and depths in one operation, reducing separate drilling, counterboring, and chamfering processes.

Improved Concentricity Between Steps

Improved Concentricity Between Steps

Because each step is produced on the same tool axis, the positional relationship between the pilot hole and larger hole diameter can be controlled more consistently.

This helps improve concentricity, shoulder position, and dimensional repeatability compared with using several independent tools.

Premium MG Carbide Material

Premium MG Carbide Material

The drill is manufactured from imported MG grade 0.8 μm tungsten carbide with 10% cobalt content.

The fine carbide structure helps provide the rigidity, edge strength, and dimensional stability required for multi-diameter cutting and batch stepped-hole machining.

Optimized Flute and Chip Evacuation

Optimized Flute and Chip Evacuation

The flute geometry is designed according to the number of steps, cutting diameter, hole depth, and workpiece material.

Sufficient chip space and smooth flute surfaces help remove chips from both the pilot section and larger cutting step, reducing chip accumulation and cutting-load fluctuation.

Frequently Asked Questions

A carbide step drill is a solid carbide tool with two or more cutting diameters. It is designed to produce stepped holes or combine several drilling operations in one machining cycle.

A step drill can combine pilot drilling, standard drilling, hole enlargement, counterboring, countersinking, chamfering, or the machining of stepped blind holes.

The main advantage is that several related hole features can be machined with one tool. This reduces tool changes, shortens cycle time, simplifies programming, and improves concentricity between hole diameters.

Yes. Two-step and multi-step designs can be manufactured according to the component drawing and machining requirements.

Yes. Each step diameter, cutting length, shoulder position, flute length, shank diameter, and overall length can be customized.

Yes. A customized shoulder angle can create a chamfer or countersink while the drill produces the main hole.

Yes. It can produce stepped blind holes when the step depths, drill-point allowance, chip space, and bottom geometry are properly designed.

All cutting diameters are ground on the same carbide blank and share the same tool axis. This helps maintain more consistent alignment between the pilot hole and larger hole sections.

Yes. We can evaluate the current tool drawing, sample, model number, or machining result and develop a corresponding replacement solution.
